The Courage to Pick Up a Chinese Brush: Body and Play

Speaker:

  • Prof. Tsang-Long Liu, Department of Chinese, National Taiwan Normal University

Discussant:

Dr. Kang-Ning Tan

Associate Professor,  Department of Chinese Literature,  National Cheng Kung University

Calligraphy is more than the art of writing beautiful characters. It is also a bodily practice through which emotions are expressed, deeply intertwined with the writer’s personal cultivation and life experience.

To promote Chinese calligraphy and encourage more people to pick up a brush and experience the art of writing, Professor Tsang-Long Liu is invited  to deliver a lecture, followed by an interactive calligraphy session co-led by Associate Professor Kang-Ning Tan.

The event consists of two parts. The first features a lecture on the relationship between calligraphy, the body and play. The second  invites participants to experience the freedom and joy of spontaneous writing through large-character calligraphy (_bangshu_ 榜書).

Faculty members, students, and members of the general public are warmly welcome to join us.
