The speaker will be Assistant Professor Chen Kang-ning of the Department of Chinese Literature at National Cheng Kung University. The lecture will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025, from 10:10 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Museum of Historical Artifacts.
Professor Chen Kang-ning will guide us in exploring how the development of Asian martial arts has been deeply influenced by Confucian philosophy, while also discussing the philosophical significance and practical value of martial arts in modern life. According to the research of Barry Allen of McMaster University in Canada, martial arts are not merely a form of sport, but also a practice that integrates body and mind. Their aesthetic consciousness, technical beauty, and philosophical foundations are intertwined, exerting a profound influence on modern people.
This lecture will help participants understand that martial arts not only strengthen the body, but also cultivate the power of the mind. It will examine how martial arts can help modern people face the pressures and challenges of life, enhance physical and mental coordination as well as self-awareness, and even serve as a tool for promoting health and spiritual growth.
