This lecture features Professor An Huanran of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, New Era University College, Malaysia, who will deliver a special lecture titled “Inheritance and Construction: Research Approaches to the Cultural Adaptation of Chinese Communities in Southeast Asia.” The lecture will be moderated by Associate Professor Chi-Chang Lee.
The inheritance and transformation of Chinese culture in Southeast Asia have long been central concerns in academic research. Previous studies have often emphasized either assimilation and integration or continued ties to ancestral homelands. Today, however, Chinese communities have long moved beyond the single historical narrative of “journeying to the Nanyang.” What, then, does the term “Nanyang style” refer to? How have Chinese communities made cultural choices and constructed their own subjectivity in the process of localization? In this lecture, Professor An Huanran will adopt a broad cross-regional and interdisciplinary perspective to examine the multiple influences of local policies, community contexts, and global mobility. His lecture will offer new research approaches that combine historical depth with contemporary relevance for understanding the regeneration of Chinese culture in Southeast Asia.
